Top Jockey Luke Tarrant Arrested for Armed Robbery

A former top jockey, Luke Tarrant, is currently in custody, facing three charges of armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently serving a 12-month disqualification from racing due to a previous offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.

According to Racenet.com, Tarrant is accused of three counts of robbery while armed, entering premises with intent to commit an indictable offense, and possessing dangerous drugs. The offense of robbery carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, which can escalate to a life sentence when involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or personal violence.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, known for his 502 career wins and three Group race victories, achieved his most significant triumph in 2015 by winning the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

In 2020, Tarrant received a six-month ban after admitting to headbutting another jockey in the weighing room. Furthermore, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding alleged health assessment forms falsification.

The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant was instructed to enter a plea. However, after several weeks with no response, the Commission panel emphasized the importance of compliance with inquiries and the integrity framework in maintaining public trust in racing.

Consequently, stewards concluded that a 12-month disqualification was appropriate, effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026, to uphold the integrity and welfare of participants in the sport.
