Four individuals lost their lives, and a dozen others sustained injuries during a shooting incident that occurred in Mississippi early on Saturday morning, as confirmed by local authorities.
The shooting transpired on a primary street in the town of Leland, which was unusually crowded due to Leland High School’s homecoming game. The mayor, John Lee, mentioned that the school’s team was scheduled to compete against Charleston High School.
The perpetrator is reportedly still at large. Mayor Lee expressed his sorrow over the tragic event on Facebook and announced the cancellation of a planned block party for safety reasons.
According to CBS News, four of the injured victims were airlifted to nearby hospitals, with their current conditions remaining undisclosed. Law enforcement has not apprehended any suspects yet, and investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, Heidelberg, another town in Mississippi, witnessed a shooting on Friday night. Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White disclosed that two individuals were fatally shot on the high school premises, with at least one additional person sustaining injuries, as reported by WDAM.
Mayor Robert Barnett of Heidelberg assured the community of their safety and vowed to collaborate closely with the school district and law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice. He emphasized the town’s commitment to upholding the law and preventing such incidents from occurring in the future.
The towns of Heidelberg and Leland are located three hours apart.
