“French Judge Accused of Fixing Figure Skating Results”

A judge from France at the Winter Olympics is facing accusations of manipulating figure skating results to ensure her country’s team, Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, won the gold medal with a total score of 225.82. This victory came by a narrow margin of 1.43 points over the American pair, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, sparking controversy following the revelation of the French judge Jezabel Dabouis’ scores.

In the ice dance competition, skaters perform two routines over two days: the rhythm dance and the free dance. Despite Chock and Bates being three-time world champions and favored to win in Milan, they were placed second after the rhythm dance section, with Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron taking the lead. Notably, discrepancies in scoring were observed among the judges, with Dabouis awarding significantly higher points to the French duo.

During the free dance, a shift in judgment occurred as five out of nine judges ranked Chock and Bates the highest. However, Dabouis notably awarded a much higher score to Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron. The International Skating Union defended the judging panel’s varying scores, stating that measures are in place to address discrepancies and affirming confidence in the fairness of the results.

In response to the controversy, the American skaters expressed mixed emotions but emphasized their pride in their performances and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Bates reflected on the subjective nature of the sport, acknowledging that outcomes can sometimes be influenced by judges’ perspectives. Meanwhile, Sky has enhanced its TV and sports bundle to include various streaming services and extensive coverage of sports events, including the Premier League and EFL matches.
