In a shocking incident captured on video, an off-duty police officer intervened in a daylight street ambush outside a phone shop, where he shot a suspected robber and assisted in apprehending another assailant. The incident occurred on Avenida Paula Ferreira in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city.
The off-duty officer, identified as Luiz Fernando Souza Nunes de Viveiros, was present in a mobile phone store when he witnessed two individuals confronting a delivery driver who had just left the premises. Upon one of the suspects declaring a robbery, the officer acted swiftly, drawing his firearm and firing a shot at one of the suspects, later identified as 26-year-old Michael Santos Preto, who was struck in the back and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The second suspect, named as 40-year-old Joao Renato Macedo dos Reis, attempted to flee on foot but was pursued and subdued by members of the public nearby. In an attempt to retaliate against the officer, the suspect tried to use a firearm, but it malfunctioned and did not discharge, as per official reports.
Following the incident, law enforcement cordoned off the area for forensic examination, and investigators collected evidence at the scene. The Sao Paulo State Department of Public Security confirmed that the suspects resisted arrest, leading to the death of one suspect at the scene, while the other was apprehended during the incident.
