Olympic Skier Lindsey Vonn Discharged After Leg Injury

Lindsey Vonn provided an emotional update, announcing her discharge from the hospital after a severe leg injury during the Winter Olympics. The incident occurred in Italy while she was competing in the downhill event, shortly after suffering an ACL injury.

Following multiple surgeries, Vonn was initially released from the Italian hospital to return to the United States for further medical care. In a heartfelt Instagram post, she detailed her injuries, which included compartment syndrome and a broken ankle, and expressed gratitude for her surgeon’s intervention in preventing amputation.

Describing the extent of her injuries in a video shared on social media, Vonn explained the complexities of compartment syndrome, emphasizing the critical role played by Dr. Tom Hackett in saving her leg through a fasciotomy procedure.

Vonn attributed the timely presence of Dr. Hackett to fate, acknowledging the successful six-hour surgery that reconstructed her leg. She also disclosed the reasons for her extended hospital stay, citing low hemoglobin levels necessitating a blood transfusion to aid recovery.

Currently wheelchair-bound due to a fractured ankle, Vonn outlined her rehabilitation plans, acknowledging the long road ahead towards full recovery, including potential future surgeries to address her ACL injury.

Expressing relief at leaving the hospital after weeks of immobility, Vonn shared her gratitude for the medical team and outlined her gradual progression from a wheelchair to crutches in the coming weeks. She anticipates a year-long healing process for her bones and eventual decisions regarding metal removal and ACL surgery.

Optimistic about her recovery journey, Vonn concluded with a message of appreciation for the support received and determination to overcome the challenges ahead.
