A tragic incident unfolded as a young woman lost her life due to alleged medical negligence where doctors left a surgical bandage inside her abdomen during the stitching of her incision post-childbirth. Jyoti Pal, a 26-year-old who gave birth to her son through a Caesarean section procedure in January, initially seemed to be recovering well. However, shortly after the birth, she started experiencing severe abdominal pain, prompting her return to the hospital for further evaluation.
Despite multiple visits to the hospital, the cause of Jyoti’s pain remained unidentified, leading to a deterioration in her health. Subsequently, at another medical facility, the presence of the forgotten bandage was finally detected, causing a severe infection that tragically led to Jyoti’s untimely death.
Following this devastating loss, Jyoti’s husband, Prajjwal, has lodged a complaint against the hospital in Dehradun, India, and the medical team involved in the C-section delivery. City authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jyoti’s demise, as confirmed by officials on October 22. The Chief Medical Officer of the district, Manoj Sharma, disclosed that the probe into the alleged negligence was set in motion on October 21.
According to reports from the Indian Express, Sharma stated that the surgery at a private hospital in Araghar was followed by a subsequent hospital visit that revealed the presence of the bandage inside Jyoti’s abdomen. Stressing the importance of accountability for medical instruments, Sharma highlighted the need for a thorough investigation into the events leading to Jyoti’s death.
The hospital under scrutiny has temporarily ceased operations pending the inquiry. A committee led by Sharma is tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding Jyoti’s passing, awaiting the post-mortem report for further insights. The committee is expected to present its findings in due course.
