Enzo Maresca has received a one-game touchline suspension due to his enthusiastic celebration following Chelsea’s recent triumph over Liverpool. Before the international break, the Italian witnessed his team secure what could be considered their most significant Premier League victory during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Heading into the match, the Blues had suffered consecutive defeats to Manchester United and Brighton and Hove Albion, making a win against the Premier League champions crucial to rejuvenate their season. When Estevao Willian scored a last-minute winner against Liverpool, Maresca’s exuberant celebration, reminiscent of Jose Mourinho, led to his second yellow card and subsequent dismissal by the referee. Consequently, the FA imposed a ban on Maresca for his actions.
In an official statement, the FA announced, “Enzo Maresca has been sanctioned with a one-match touchline ban and fined £8,000 for inappropriate conduct during the Premier League game between Chelsea and Liverpool on Saturday 4 October.” Maresca admitted to the charges and accepted the standard penalty.
As a result, he will be absent from the touchline for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Nottingham Forest. The team, currently on 11 points with three wins, two draws, and two losses, aims to stay competitive in the Premier League, especially with Arsenal leading by five points.
Following the game, Maresca expressed disappointment over his dismissal on Instagram, mentioning the joy of the victory and the missed opportunity to celebrate with the fans. Looking ahead, Chelsea faces Dutch giants Ajax in their third Champions League group stage match, seeking to bounce back after a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich and a narrow 1-0 win against Benfica.
The Blues cannot afford to drop more points in both their domestic and European campaigns, knowing that falling behind top teams could jeopardize their chances of advancing to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
