Defeating former Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, Mamdani will become the city’s first Muslim mayor. Despite Trump’s support for Cuomo to prevent Mamdani’s victory, Mamdani secured over half of the votes, leading Cuomo by approximately eight percentage points.
The election saw a record turnout of over 2 million voters in New York City, with concerns about the cost of living and housing driving many to the polls. A poll by the Associated Press revealed that most voters in the city identified the cost of living, particularly housing costs, as the top issue. Mamdani’s campaign focused heavily on addressing these concerns.
While Mamdani faced resistance from the Democratic party establishment, he garnered support from key Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Gov. Kathy Hochul. Former President Barack Obama also reached out to offer his support and guidance to Mamdani.
In a night of victories for Democrats, New Jersey elected Democrat Mikie Sherrill as Governor, defeating Trump-endorsed Republican Jack Ciattarelli. Sherrill’s win marks the first time since 1961 that one party has won three consecutive terms in the New Jersey governor’s office. A Navy veteran and four-term U.S. House representative, Sherrill will be New Jersey’s second female governor.
In Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger made history as the commonwealth’s first female governor. Spanberger emphasized the significance of her win for inspiring young women to pursue their goals and acknowledged the trailblazers who paved the way for her success.
