Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has passed away, as confirmed by Leeds Rhinos. Geoff played a crucial role in the fundraising efforts following Rob’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease.
Leeds Rhinos expressed their profound sorrow at the loss of Geoff Burrow, who passed away on March 30th after battling illness. A native of Leeds, Geoff tirelessly supported the MND community after Rob’s diagnosis in 2019 and continued his advocacy even after Rob’s passing in 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to his first rugby game at Headingley, sparking Rob’s passion for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed for marginalized voices.
The club extended its deepest sympathies to Geoff’s wife Irene and the entire Burrow family during this difficult time, urging privacy for the grieving family.
Rob Burrow, a Leeds legend, fought MND from late 2019 until his death in 2024, supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield. Together, they spearheaded efforts that led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. The center, costing £6.8 million, opened in November 2025, following groundbreaking shortly after Rob’s passing.
Geoff expressed gratitude for the fundraising efforts, emphasizing the importance of supporting not only MND patients and families but also the dedicated staff. He shared that their priority was to ensure Rob’s journey ended peacefully without suffering.
Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens all offered their condolences and support to the Burrow family during this trying period.
Geoff’s passing marks a poignant moment for the rugby community, as they remember his unwavering commitment to raising awareness about MND and supporting his son in his battle against the disease.
