A fugitive fraudster mistakenly walked free from prison due to a mix-up in his sentencing with another individual sharing the same surname. William “Billy” Smith received a 45-month sentence for various fraud crimes at Croydon Crown Court. However, an error in the system led to his release instead of serving his term. Authorities are now in pursuit of him to return him to custody.
Smith was convicted alongside a co-defendant, Joseph Smith, during the court proceedings. While Joseph, who was present in court on bail, received a suspended sentence allowing him to avoid imprisonment, Billy, who appeared via video link from HMP Wandsworth, was supposed to serve a custodial sentence. The confusion arose when the sentences were wrongly input into the digital system, resulting in Billy being erroneously granted a suspended sentence and subsequently released.
Efforts were made to rectify the mistake before Billy’s release, but further errors occurred, leading to his premature discharge from prison. Surrey Police issued an appeal to locate Billy Smith, 35, who was released in error. He was last seen wearing specific clothing and has ties to Woking but could be anywhere in Surrey. Additionally, another individual, Algerian national Brahim Kaddour Cherif, was also mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth, prompting urgent search efforts by the authorities.
