“Starmer Warns Against UK Gov’t Backtracking on Climate Pledges”

Keir Starmer strongly criticized Reform and the Conservative Party, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to enhancing Britain’s environmental commitments. Addressing the COP 30 conference in Belem, Brazil, the Prime Minister cautioned that neglecting the pursuit of net zero emissions could lead to detrimental impacts on energy costs and national security.

Starmer’s remarks came in response to Kemi Badenoch’s announcement of plans to discard the UK Government’s climate pledges, and Nigel Farage’s pledge to eliminate net zero targets and associated subsidies. Speaking at the international summit, the PM highlighted the loss of consensus in the UK regarding environmental action, with some parties neglecting the opportunities presented by the green revolution.

He questioned the delay in action, emphasizing the urgency of addressing energy security, rising bills, and seizing opportunities in green job creation and investments. Warning against inaction, he pointed out the potential consequences such as increased prices, unanswered calls for action, and heightened vulnerability in communities.

Referring to the recent hurricane devastation in the Caribbean caused by Hurricane Melissa, he expressed solidarity with the affected regions and urged for collective action towards seizing the opportunities presented by addressing climate change.

Amid criticism from Kemi Badenoch, Labour defended the PM’s participation at COP as a display of UK leadership on the global stage and a driver for job creation and economic opportunities across the country. Recent polling revealed widespread public concern about the climate crisis and a perception that the UK government is not doing enough in terms of climate action.

ActionAid UK polling indicated that while the majority of the public worries about climate change, only a small percentage of working individuals are concerned about its impact on their current jobs. Zahra Hdidou, Senior Climate and Resilience Advisor at ActionAid UK, emphasized the importance of taking decisive action to cut carbon emissions to ensure a sustainable future for the next generation.
