“Search Underway for Missing Man after Tragic Malta Drowning”

A man from Britain is currently missing following a tragic incident where an 11-year-old boy lost his life while swimming in Malta. The authorities, including the police and the Civil Protection Department, swiftly initiated an intensive search operation at Ramla Bay after the distress call around 1pm on Monday. Despite efforts to rescue the boy and transport him to the hospital, he unfortunately passed away upon arrival.

It remains unclear whether the man and the boy were swimming together at the time they encountered difficulties. Notably, the Meteorological Office had issued warnings of strong winds affecting Malta earlier in the week. Since the beginning of 2025, a total of 16 drowning incidents have been reported in the country.

Efforts to locate the missing man, who has not been identified, have resumed today. Magistrate Brigitte Sultana is conducting an inquiry into the recent events as per local sources.

In a separate incident last month, a British visitor drowned at a renowned landmark in Malta after using a slide from a pleasure boat into the sea at the Blue Lagoon in Comino. Observers noticed the 43-year-old man submerged underwater, administered CPR, but sadly, he did not survive.

Following the tragedy, an inquiry has been launched by Magistrate Brigitte Sultana, and emergency responders from Malta’s Emergency Response and Rescue Corps promptly transported the victim to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo.

Regrettably, drowning incidents in Malta are on the rise. In August, a 35-year-old Italian man lost his life after facing difficulties at the Blue Lagoon, while in April, the body of a 71-year-old fisherman was discovered off the coast of Comino hours after being reported missing.

In another unfortunate event, a Spanish tourist tragically passed away after being struck by a propeller while boarding a boat in Comino, sustaining severe injuries that led to her death in July.

Although the Blue Lagoon is a popular attraction in Malta, concerns regarding safety, including environmental preservation, have been raised. The website emphasizes safety measures, stating that lifeguards are present to ensure visitor safety, particularly during the swimming season from May to October.
