Traveler Challenges Airline Over Bag Sizer Test

A disgruntled traveler has accused easyJet of singling him out, alleging that the airline required him to demonstrate that his luggage fit the designated sizer four times before allowing him to board his flight. Richard Deakin, a 37-year-old traveler, was departing from London Luton Airport for a brief trip to Málaga, Spain with only carry-on baggage, which included clothes for his stay and four containers of gravy granules for his friend’s mother.

Despite acknowledging his frustration, Richard insisted that his bag fit the sizer, although airline staff disagreed. Annoyed by the situation, Richard asked another passenger to film him as he attempted to fit his bag into the sizer to prove his point. The video, shared on TikTok, showed Richard persistently pushing his bag until it finally slid in, prompting him to question staff members about the fitting criteria.

Richard claims he was asked to test his bag in the sizer two more times, under the supervision of managers, causing him to remove a book and a battery pack out of concern for missing his flight. He argued that the airline’s actions were a profit-driven strategy and emphasized that travelers should not blindly pay fines if their luggage adheres to the size limits.

While some social media users supported Richard, others criticized him for his confrontational approach towards the staff. Richard, from Halesowen, West Midlands, highlighted his determination to resist unjust baggage charges and urged fellow travelers to challenge excessive fees for compliant baggage. He stressed the importance of questioning such practices, mentioning that many passengers unknowingly fall into such traps.

Responding to the incident, an easyJet spokesperson clarified that their bag policy is well-established, charging customers only for oversized bags to maintain fairness among travelers. The airline does not tolerate aggressive behavior towards its ground crew, and once Richard successfully fit his bag into the sizer, he was not charged and allowed to board the flight.
