I Am Maximus emerged victorious in the 2026 Grand National, completing the race in a time of 9 minutes and 9.68 seconds. This win secured the horse’s second consecutive title, putting it alongside Tiger Roll as a two-time champion at this prestigious racing event, owned by JP McManus.
The triumph also solidified McManus as the most successful owner in the history of the Grand National, with four wins to his name. Furthermore, it marked another back-to-back victory for trainer Willie Mullins, who guided Nick Rockett to victory the previous year.
Reflecting on the win, jockey Paul Townend, who has achieved a Gold Cup and Grand National double this season, praised I Am Maximus’ tenacity and talent, highlighting the horse’s exceptional performance throughout the race.
Mullins commended the horse’s exceptional ride, emphasizing the strategic decision to focus on the Aintree race rather than pursuing the Gold Cup route. He noted the evolving nature of the National race and its significance in the world of horse racing.
In addition to I Am Maximus, the Grand National saw notable placements for other horses, with Iroko finishing second, followed by Jordans in third place. The rest of the lineup included Jonnywho in fourth, High Class Hero in fifth, and Favori De Champdou in sixth place.
Several riders unseated during the race, including Bainbridge, Grangeclare West, Oscars Brother, Beauport, Captain Cody, Jagwar, and Perceval Legallois. Meanwhile, horses like Gerri Colombe, Mr Vango, Stellar Story, Quai De Bourbon, Marble Sands, Panic Attack, and Top Of The Bill fell during the competition.
Horses such as Spanish Harlem, Lecky Watson, The Real Whacker, and Amirite were pulled up during the race, while non-runners included Nick Rockett, Spillane’s Tower, and Pied Piper.
