“Southgate’s Touching Gesture: Graham Thorpe’s Son Shares Heartfelt Story”

The son of legendary English cricketer Graham Thorpe recently shared a heartwarming story about receiving support from his ‘hero’ Gareth Southgate following his father’s tragic passing in 2024 after battling with depression. Henry Thorpe, Graham’s son, expressed the challenges he faced coping with his father’s death at the age of 55, just two years after Graham lost his position as an assistant coach for the England cricket team.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Henry disclosed that he only learned the full circumstances of his father’s death six months later, revealing his struggle and descent into a dark place afterward. However, he recounted a touching gesture from Gareth Southgate, who reached out to him during a difficult moment.

Henry recalled a poignant encounter with Southgate at his father’s event, where despite his emotional turmoil, Southgate’s subsequent message of support provided much-needed comfort. Following Graham Thorpe’s passing, Henry made the decision to leave his job at M&C Saatchi Merlin, acknowledging the profound impact of his father’s death while gaining a newfound appreciation for his father’s legacy and accomplishments.

Reflecting on his father’s illustrious cricket career from 1993 to 2005, which included 16 test centuries in 564 appearances for England, Henry expressed complex emotions of grief, pride, and introspection. Graham Thorpe transitioned to coaching post-retirement and was set to lead Afghanistan in 2022 before falling ill.
