“Asda Introduces Digital Price Tags in 250 Express Stores”

Asda, a leading supermarket chain, is set to roll out digital price tags in its largest Express convenience stores. This new initiative will be implemented in 250 stores, following the example of Lidl and Currys, who already utilize electronic shelf edge labels (ESLs) in their establishments.

Shoppers will notice a significant change, as demonstrated during a trial period at Asda’s Oxford Road branch in Manchester lasting three months. According to Asda executives, this trial allowed staff to focus more on customer assistance, managing deliveries, and restocking shelves, as the labor-intensive task of updating outdated labels became unnecessary.

Approximately 2,800 electronic shelf edge labels will be installed in stores, eliminating the need for manual price updates by employees. The technology, provided by rVusionGroup in collaboration with Renovotec and HL Display, not only displays product prices but also showcases allergen information through QR codes, as well as product weight and unit price.

As part of its convenience store expansion plan, Asda will open up to 20 new Express stores by the end of the year, all featuring electronic shelf edge labels from the outset to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.

Joseph Sutton, Vice President of Asda Express, foodservice, and fuel, emphasized the company’s commitment to store enhancement through cutting-edge technology, enabling staff to focus on customer service. Roy Horgan, CEO of VusionGroup UK and Ireland, expressed pride in extending the partnership with Asda and highlighted the transformative impact of ESLs on the in-store experience for customers and employees.

In addition to these changes, a potential transformation in checkout operations at supermarkets has been hinted at, with proposals to revamp till operations. Furthermore, shoppers can anticipate upcoming toy sales leading up to Christmas, with major chains offering discounts of up to 50% on select items and exclusive toy offerings.
