“Newcomer’s Unlikely Bond with Serial Killer”

Andrea Kubinova, a newcomer to the UK, developed an unexpected bond with notorious serial killer Dennis Nilsen. Intrigued by Nilsen’s dark past after reading a recommended true crime book, she delved into his motives behind the gruesome murders he committed.

Nilsen, who was convicted of six murders and two attempted murders in 1983, was known for his chilling crimes. He would strangle or drown his victims, then engage in disturbing rituals like bathing and photographing their bodies before concealing them under his floorboards. His method of disposal involved dissecting and boiling the remains, leading to his eventual capture when plumbers discovered human remains in his drain.

Despite his heinous acts, Kubinova felt compelled to understand Nilsen’s psyche and reached out to him by letter in 2013. To her surprise, Nilsen responded, initiating a unique correspondence between them. Over time, they exchanged hundreds of letters, with Nilsen sharing personal stories and advice, becoming a mentor-like figure to Kubinova.

Their relationship evolved to include in-person visits, during which Nilsen, a complex individual with a scarred face and a Scottish accent, shared anecdotes about his life and showed a friendlier side. While Kubinova refrained from discussing his crimes directly, Nilsen expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the impact on his victims’ families.

Tragically, Nilsen passed away in 2018, leaving Kubinova devastated. Their bond inspired her to pursue a career in probation to better understand criminals and prevent further harm. Despite the unsettling nature of their connection, Kubinova viewed Nilsen as a significant part of her life, highlighting the complexities of human relationships and the capacity for empathy even in the darkest of circumstances.
