The family of a British teenager who had been imprisoned in Dubai is devastated following his untimely death in a car accident shortly after his release. Marcus Fakana, 19, passed away in a collision in Tottenham, North London, exactly three months after being freed from jail in Dubai for engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage, which violated the UAE’s strict laws.
After months of vigorous advocacy by his family, Marcus was granted a royal pardon. Expressing her grief on social media, his aunt questioned the outcome despite her efforts to secure his release from prison. The family members extended their condolences and expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss.
Radha Stirling, the Founder and CEO of Detained in Dubai, the legal firm that represented Marcus during his imprisonment, highlighted the detrimental impact of incarceration on individuals. She emphasized Marcus’s resilience and positive outlook upon regaining his freedom.
Following a report from the girl’s mother, Marcus was arrested in Dubai over his relationship with a teenager. Subsequently, a campaign for his release led to a royal pardon after he was sentenced to one year in prison. His tragic death was confirmed by the Metropolitan Police, who arrested the driver involved in the collision and charged him with multiple offenses.
The incident is under investigation by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The family has requested privacy during this challenging time.
