Musetti Secures ATP Finals Spot After Djokovic Withdrawal

Lorenzo Musetti had a tense week but managed to secure a coveted spot at the ATP Finals. Despite an early exit at the Paris Masters, the 23-year-old was on track to qualify for the season-ending event until Felix Auger-Aliassime overtook him in the Race to Turin.

To determine his fate, Musetti competed at the ATP 250 tournament in Athens. Winning the tournament meant securing his place at the ATP Finals, whereas falling short would open the door for Auger-Aliassime to claim the final spot.

Although Musetti lost to Novak Djokovic in the Athens final, Djokovic’s subsequent withdrawal from the year-end Finals allowed Musetti to secure his spot. Following his quick turnaround from the Athens final, Musetti flew to Turin to face Taylor Fritz in the ATP Finals on Monday.

Expressing his excitement on social media, Musetti referred to his qualification as a dream come true. Despite aiming for his third career title at the Hellenic Championship, Musetti faced disappointment in the final, marking his first title opportunity since 2022.

After the match, Musetti shared that Djokovic informed him on the court about his decision not to participate in Turin. Musetti respected Djokovic’s choice to delay the withdrawal announcement, acknowledging that he was curious about Djokovic’s decision throughout the week.

Djokovic’s withdrawal prompted the ATP to swiftly find a replacement alternate. Casper Ruud stepped in as the second alternate after Alexander Bublik moved up as the first alternate. Ruud, who had been on holiday, arrived in Turin to serve as the second alternate and was spotted watching Carlos Alcaraz’s match on Sunday.

Both Bublik and Ruud, as alternates, will receive compensation even if they do not play. Their appearance fees will increase if they are called upon to participate in a match.
