The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2025 concluded with a play-off between Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai, who finished with a tournament record 25-under total. Rory McIlroy narrowly missed out on joining the play-off, ending one shot behind the leaders at the Yas Links Golf Course.
Having previously faced off in a DP World Tour playoff, Fleetwood and Rai battled it out while McIlroy graciously acknowledged their performances and exchanged congratulations with them.
The two English golfers had a history from the 2020 Scottish Open, where Rai emerged victorious over Fleetwood in a playoff. McIlroy, who felt the pressure during the Abu Dhabi tournament, admitted to struggling with patience as Rai set a competitive pace.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy expressed his frustrations, stating that he left opportunities on the course throughout the week. Despite feeling that he played well, he acknowledged being six shots behind the leaders due to some missed chances.
In contrast, Rai and Fleetwood embraced the challenge of competing against a golf icon. Rai, ranked 30th globally and the previous Wyndham Championship winner, highlighted the significance of the tournament and the tough competition ahead.
Fleetwood commended Rai’s exceptional performance, emphasizing the importance of patience and acknowledging the high level of play displayed by his competitor.
