Donald Trump, despite his involvement in brokering a peace deal in Gaza, has been overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize. The prestigious award was granted to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition politician, by the Nobel committee. The committee commended Machado for her relentless efforts in advocating for democratic rights in Venezuela and her pursuit of a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
Trump, who actively campaigned to receive the prize, garnered multiple nominations from global politicians seeking to align themselves with the influential figure. The former US President expressed discontent over his predecessor, Barack Obama, receiving the award for what he deemed as negligible achievements. Trump’s advocates highlighted his claims of ending seven wars and his role in negotiating the Abraham Accords as reasons for his nomination, though these were considered before his second presidential term commenced.
The committee’s decision to pass over Trump may have been influenced by his public lobbying and controversial actions, including extrajudicial killings related to Venezuela, renaming the Department of Defence, and deploying troops domestically. The Nobel committee emphasized that their selection process is solely based on merit and the ideals set forth by Alfred Nobel.
While Trump’s supporters may view the snub as a deliberate slight, particularly after his contribution to the Israel-Hamas peace deal, the committee values enduring peace efforts and international cooperation. The Nobel Peace Prize, established in 1901, aims to recognize individuals promoting global fraternity, reducing armed conflicts, and fostering peace initiatives. Past US Presidents who have received the award include Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Barack Obama.
Notwithstanding Trump’s foreign policy initiatives, his chances of winning the Nobel Peace Prize remained slim, as per long-term observers. Potential recipients highlighted by the Peace Research Institute Oslo included organizations like Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms and the Committee to Protect Journalists. Last year’s laureate was Nihon Hidankyo, a group advocating against the use of nuclear weapons, showcasing the diverse range of recipients honored for their peace efforts.
The Nobel Peace Prize, unique among the Nobel prizes, is presented annually in Oslo, Norway.
