“Digital Veteran ID Cards Launch for 2M Veterans”

A new initiative is being introduced today that will allow digital veteran identification cards to be accessible via smartphones. This development aims to facilitate approximately two million veterans in proving their status more conveniently through an official government app.

The implementation of these digital cards will enable military veterans to easily access various benefits, including housing support, discounts at stores and attractions, and the ability to share their service background with healthcare providers for personalized medical care. It is worth noting that while the digital cards are optional, veterans will still have the option to obtain physical cards if preferred.

This marks the first instance of the government launching digital ID cards, with plans underway for a pilot program for digital driving licenses later this year. The move comes amid discussions about the potential introduction of mandatory digital ID cards to address illegal migration issues, although concerns have been raised regarding data protection and civil liberties.

Ian Murray, the minister for digital government, highlighted that the veterans ID cards could serve as a model for demonstrating the functionality of such credentials, addressing privacy and security concerns. The veterans card can be accessed through the GOV.UK One Login app, an existing platform used for identity verification when accessing government services.

Although discussions have centered around the GOV.UK wallet, officials clarified that the full deployment of the wallet will occur at a later stage, coinciding with the development of additional digital credentials like digital driving licenses. The foundation for a digital wallet has already been integrated into the One Login app, ensuring compliance with the highest security standards across government platforms.

In the initial phase, the veterans card can be utilized in person, for example, at museum ticket counters for discounted admission, with plans to enable online usage in the near future. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive support to veterans, emphasizing that the digital veterans’ card will streamline access to public services and eliminate bureaucratic obstacles.
