Construction Firm Caldwell Construction Limited Enters Administration, 400 Jobs at Risk

A firm specializing in groundworks and civil engineering, Caldwell Construction Limited, has entered administration, potentially endangering over 400 jobs. The company, established in 2007, has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory, with offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.

Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, noted the challenging trading environment faced by the construction sector, citing rising costs, project delays, and market uncertainties in recent years. Despite reporting a turnover of £58.4 million last year, Caldwell’s operational profit was under £1 million. Smith highlighted the escalating pressures on cash flow and operations, leading to the company’s current situation.

Efforts by the PKF Littlejohn Advisory team in Manchester and Leeds to explore solutions for Caldwell proved futile, ultimately resulting in the firm’s insolvency. Joint Administrator Oliver Collinge confirmed the company’s decision to enter administration, with immediate focus on supporting employees and stakeholders while evaluating the business’s assets.

In a separate incident, Consumer Energy Solutions in south Wales also collapsed into administration, affecting nearly 300 employees. The company, with locations in Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf, abruptly halted trading, leaving staff shocked and uncertain about their future just before the holiday season. The organization cited the conclusion of the UK Government-backed Energy Company Obligation 4 scheme as the reason behind the proposed restructure and job cuts.

Consumer Energy Solutions expressed regret over its inability to fulfill further customer work, signaling the end of its operations. Administrators James Saunders and Michael Lennon of KR8 Advisory Limited were appointed to oversee the administration process. The notice clarified that the company’s administration did not involve any other entities within the City Energy Group.
