Before the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen attributed McLaren’s mistakes as the key factor keeping him in contention for the Formula 1 title race. This past Sunday, McLaren’s errors not only allowed Verstappen to stay competitive but also provided him a real opportunity to challenge another British driver on the final day.
Verstappen clinched his first F1 championship by overtaking Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi race. Currently, he is trailing Lando Norris by just 12 points as he aims for his fifth consecutive title. Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri is four points behind, setting up a thrilling three-way battle for the championship on the final day, the first of its kind since 2010 when Sebastian Vettel staged a remarkable comeback to win the championship.
Reflecting on past events, Verstappen acknowledged the significance of such dramatic finishes but maintained a positive outlook for the upcoming race. He highlighted McLaren’s repeated mistakes, with Red Bull’s strategy chief taking a subtle dig at McLaren by collecting the constructors’ trophy alongside Verstappen.
Following McLaren’s disappointing outcome, team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown opted not to speak to the media initially. Stella emphasized that Norris and Verstappen would receive equal treatment despite the heightened threat from the Red Bull driver.
Piastri, though still in the running for the championship, appeared resigned to the challenging odds ahead. While disappointed, he expressed determination to replicate his strong performance in Abu Dhabi. Even if Piastri wins, Norris only needs to secure a podium finish to clinch the title, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Verstappen’s race engineer hinted at potential team tactics involving Norris, leading to contrasting views from Red Bull and Mercedes officials. Tensions rose as accusations flew, with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff vehemently denying any foul play.
