An individual set fire to her former partner’s residence, leaving him with nothing but the clothes on his back. Stacey Hinks, 34, intentionally ignited a blaze that not only destroyed her ex-partner’s home and possessions but also caused significant damage to three neighboring houses. The incident took place on May 15 at Springfield Grove in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. Following the arson, Hinks contacted her ex to notify him about the fire, initially met with disbelief until concerned friends and family called to check on his safety.
The victim’s house was completely destroyed, resulting in the loss of all his belongings, including sentimental items that cannot be replaced. The adjacent properties also suffered severe damage, displacing their occupants temporarily. Surveillance footage captured neighbors bravely warning potential occupants, ultimately ensuring the safe evacuation of an 89-year-old woman. Fortunately, the other residents were absent during the incident.
In a victim impact statement, the ex-partner expressed his profound loss, emphasizing the destruction of irreplaceable sentimental possessions. The 90-year-old neighbor, who lost her home and cherished items, condemned Hinks for the emotional, physical, financial, and mental harm caused. She highlighted the impact of losing her independence and being forced to relocate away from her familiar surroundings.
Hinks, arrested two days after the arson, pleaded guilty to the charge of arson endangering life. She received a sentence of four years and ten months in prison at York Crown Court. Detective Constable Karen Everitt of North Yorkshire Police condemned Hinks for devastating the lives of three innocent individuals, praising the swift actions of neighbors in ensuring the safety of residents. Despite the emotional toll, no lives were lost due to the fire, thanks to the intervention of vigilant community members.
