England’s Mark Wood Faces Extended Injury Layoff

England’s pace bowler Mark Wood may face an extended period on the sidelines due to injury, despite England’s strong performance in the Ashes. Joe Root’s exceptional unbeaten century propelled England to a commanding position on the first day of the second Test at The Gabba.

Root’s stellar 135 not out guided England to 325-9, with contributions from Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32 not out). While Australia had their moments, the day was dominated by Ben Stokes’ team.

Off the field, concerns arose regarding Wood’s knee injury. Wood, initially ruled out for the second Test, may also miss the following match in Adelaide. The 35-year-old expressed uncertainty about his return, hinting that a comeback before Christmas might be challenging.

Wood, plagued by various injuries throughout his career, made his Test comeback in Perth after 15 months due to an elbow issue. Still wearing a knee brace in Brisbane, Wood watched from the changing room as England made a solitary change, bringing in Will Jacks to replace him.

Former England captain Michael Atherton remarked on the setback, emphasizing Wood’s importance as a key fast bowler in England’s Ashes strategy. Wood’s absence led to a tactical shift for England in Brisbane, opting for spin bowler Jacks for added depth.

In response to Root’s brilliance, Mitchell Starc shone for Australia, capturing 6-71 with the pink ball. The ongoing Ashes series promises more thrilling action, with live coverage available on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel.
