The aftermath of a fatal tornado in Paris reveals the destruction caused by the twister that swept through the outskirts of the French capital last night.
A person lost their life, and nine individuals sustained severe injuries when the tornado hit an area just ten miles north of Paris on Monday evening. Val d’Oise was the region struck by the weather phenomenon, tearing through the area and prompting a significant emergency response that led to the evacuation of residents from their homes, seeking refuge in a gym.
Dramatic footage captured the moment when three cranes collapsed, one after the other, due to the storm. Approximately 80 firefighters, 50 police officers, and 20 ambulance service members were deployed, with four individuals in critical condition.
Among the casualties was a 23-year-old construction worker who tragically died at a construction site. The powerful winds also ripped off roofs from buildings, unleashed by what authorities described as a sudden and exceptionally intense tornado. The cleanup process has now commenced as the locals grapple with the aftermath.
The Keraunos observatory, a French weather monitoring institution, reported that the sudden gusts appeared to have originated from a supercell-type storm. These types of thunderstorms are characterized by a rotating updraft of circulating air that can persist for hours, creating severe weather conditions such as large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter): “A sudden and unusually intense tornado episode struck several towns in Vald’Oise, causing the death of one person and seriously injuring several others. I am closely monitoring the situation and express my support for the elected officials, the emergency services on site, and the affected residents. I offer my condolences to the loved ones of the deceased victim.”
Numerous homes were obliterated by the unexpected weather event on Monday. As the winds swirled, the grim reality of the impending disaster loomed. The collapse of three cranes in the strong winds was witnessed by horrified residents. Roofs were ripped off homes, forcing dozens to seek shelter in a local gym. Over 80 firefighters were mobilized to assist and rescue frightened residents. Philippe Court, the Prefect of Val-d’Oise, addressed the nation last night. Video footage captured the onset of the spiraling winds, as residents looked on in shock as the cranes tumbled down.
