Political analyst Sir John Curtice has expressed that the general public lacks awareness of Kemi Badenoch and criticizes the Conservative Party for a history of unfulfilled promises regarding immigration issues. He highlighted that recent controversies like Partygate and Liz Truss’s failed budget have led to a decline in Conservative support, with Badenoch failing to prevent this decline.
In an interview with the Mirror before the Conservative party conference in Manchester, Sir John questioned whether another leader could fare better, emphasizing the importance of charisma. Recent polling data by YouGov MRP suggested that the Tories might only secure 45 seats in the upcoming general election.
Sir John noted that despite being the party responsible for delivering Brexit, the Conservatives struggle to maintain popularity among both Brexit and Remain voters. He pointed out Badenoch’s challenges in dealing with competition from Reform, affecting the party’s stance on diversity and its perception of Nigel Farage.
Regarding Badenoch’s upcoming conference speech, Sir John believed it could serve as an opportunity for her to introduce herself to the public but cautioned that making a comeback in the next year’s elections would be arduous due to her lack of visibility and recognition among the wider audience.
He emphasized that the core issue with Badenoch’s standing is not her lack of popularity but the general public’s unfamiliarity with her. Despite efforts to address immigration concerns and compete with Reform, the Tories face a credibility challenge due to their track record on the issue.
