Argos is currently offering a popular alternative to Sky Q with the introduction of the Manhattan S4-R set-top box. This device, launched recently, boasts similar features to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record shows, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.
What sets the Manhattan S4-R apart is its cost structure. Unlike Sky Q, which entails a monthly subscription fee, the Manhattan S4-R provides access to over 100 channels without any ongoing payments once the device is purchased. This is made possible through Freesat, utilizing an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to your television, including popular channels like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, and more.
The Manhattan S4-R offers a user-friendly interface, built-in search functionality, and access to a vast library of on-demand content totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
While the Manhattan S4-R may not match Sky Q in premium sports and movie offerings, its main advantage lies in being completely free to watch. The 500GB model of the Manhattan S4-R is currently available for £219.99 at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions set to launch soon. The device is in high demand, with Argos indicating it is “selling fast.”
According to Manhattan COO Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the company aimed to replicate the subscription-free experience of their T4-R Freeview recorder for Freesat users with the S4-R. He highlighted the improved recording capabilities of the S4-R, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit, making it an attractive option for households seeking an affordable alternative to subscription TV services.
Another device challenging traditional TV providers is the Pleio puck, which offers free streaming access to TVs without requiring an aerial. The Pleio puck provides over 50 live channels over the internet rather than through conventional broadcast methods.
Following initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is now available for purchase through retailers like Amazon and eBay at £99.99, bundled with a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
As a response to the upcoming World Cup, Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction on the Sky Glass Air TV, starting from £4.50 per month. Customers looking for the enhanced Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect to pay from £11 per month.
