Fire TV Stick users are being urged to exercise caution when adding new apps to their devices due to a recent security concern. The popular tool “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, leaving room for a fraudulent copycat app aimed at scamming users.
The issue arose when Downloader vanished from Amazon’s marketplace over the weekend. For almost ten years, Downloader has been a go-to tool for Fire TV owners to access apps not found in official stores.
However, the app faced a temporary suspension after an update flagged it as a web browser, violating Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices. The developer, Elias Saba, is working on a fix to address this issue and hopes for a swift approval from Amazon to restore the app to the store.
In the meantime, users are advised to steer clear of a fake version of Downloader that is attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into paying a weekly fee. Saba emphasized the importance of reporting this scam app to Amazon to prevent further exploitation.
If you already have the legitimate Downloader installed, avoid uninstalling it as reinstallation may not be possible until it is reinstated by Amazon. Additionally, disable Auto Offload in the device settings to prevent automatic removal of the app.
Pending Amazon’s approval, Downloader may make a comeback on Fire TV devices later in the week. Users are encouraged to stay vigilant and monitor the situation closely for updates.
