A fish and chip shop in Par, Cornwall, faced serious hygiene issues resulting in a zero rating after inspectors found live maggots in a container with foul-smelling liquid, alongside spoiled chicken and a fly problem. Biscovey Fish Bar was flagged for inadequate hygiene practices, expired food items, and substandard cleanliness during the assessment conducted on July 23 by Cornwall Council officials.
The shop’s new managers, who took over in March, expressed surprise at the unpleasant discoveries and disclosed significant investment in renovations to address the concerns raised. According to a report by Cornwall Live, the inspection on July 25 revealed the presence of maggots, decaying food items, flies in the kitchen area, improper storage of raw meat, and expired chilled products.
Further investigations uncovered moldy cooked chicken, lack of soap in staff toilets, and structural deficiencies such as missing door handles and broken wall tiling. However, subsequent inspections on July 29 and September 4 showed noticeable enhancements in cleanliness and hygiene protocols at the establishment.
The restaurant’s manager acknowledged the ongoing improvements since assuming ownership in March, citing structural repairs and equipment upgrades. He clarified that certain issues, like the presence of maggots near a leaking boiler, went unnoticed initially due to the shop’s condition upon takeover. The manager highlighted investments made in rectifying infrastructural shortcomings and emphasized the commitment to maintaining hygiene standards.
Following the implemented changes, the manager anticipated a higher hygiene rating upon reassessment, indicating substantial financial resources allocated towards refurbishments and repairs. The manager also clarified misunderstandings regarding hot water availability and door handle removal, attributing these incidents to necessary upgrades and operational adjustments.
