An easyJet traveler shared her ordeal of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised when easyJet charged her €58 (£51) upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete, claiming her suitcase exceeded size limits despite her careful pre-checking.
After contacting the bag manufacturer to verify compliance, easyJet refunded Machin the fee. This incident reflects a wider issue highlighted by consumer group Which? regarding inconsistencies in airport bag sizers leading to unjust fines for passengers.
Machin, a London resident, faced the penalty on her return journey despite passing checks on her initial trip. She argued that the sizer at Chania Airport was inaccurate compared to other airports, leading to the wrongful charge.
Following confirmation from the bag manufacturer Cabin Max, easyJet reimbursed Machin. Similar cases of misjudged bag sizes have been reported by Which?, cautioning passengers to appeal if they believe they were wrongly fined.
Despite no reported faults with Chania Airport’s sizers, easyJet assured standardized sizers across all airports and addressed Machin’s case individually, offering an apology and refund.
