England Rugby Team Stands with Captain Maro Itoje

England’s national rugby team has expressed solidarity with their captain, Maro Itoje, following the recent passing of his mother, Florence. Itoje revealed the sad news of his mother’s death in December and has traveled to Nigeria for her funeral.

The 31-year-old player was absent from Saracens’ match against Newcastle to be with his family in Nigeria. He also missed the Six Nations launch event in Edinburgh, with his friend Jamie George stepping in for media obligations.

George, who lost his own mother during the Six Nations in 2024, empathized with Itoje’s situation, highlighting the emotional challenges. He emphasized the importance of allowing Itoje time to grieve and process his loss before returning fully committed to the team.

As England prepares for the upcoming Six Nations tournament, they are heading to Girona for a warm weather training camp. Itoje is expected to join the team in Spain after completing his responsibilities in Nigeria. Head coach Steve Borthwick is confident in Itoje’s readiness for the competition.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Itoje paid tribute to his mother, describing her as his confidant, friend, and guiding light. Despite the profound loss, he expressed gratitude for her impact on his life and found solace in his faith.

Borthwick acknowledged the emotional toll on Itoje and praised his leadership qualities, anticipating his return to the team. The England squad is determined to support Itoje and honor his mother’s memory on the field.
