Florida Inmate’s Unconventional Pregnancy Trial

A woman on trial for murder in Florida gained attention for conceiving a baby while incarcerated without physical contact. Daisy Link, 30, faced charges for the 2022 killing of her husband, Pedro Jimenez, resulting in her imprisonment at the Miami-Dade Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Despite the circumstances, she gave birth to a child in 2024, whose conception involved another inmate also detained at the time.

During her trial that commenced on October 8, Link’s defense argued that she shot her husband in self-defense after enduring years of abuse, citing a violent altercation where he allegedly struck her with a gun days before the fatal incident. Video evidence presented in court captured the aftermath of the shooting, showcasing the injury that led to Jimenez’s death.

Prosecutors contended that Link acted out of anger when she shot her husband and misled investigators by claiming she found him injured in an alley. The trial will determine whether the shooting was justified. Link made headlines previously for an unconventional pregnancy in 2023 while in custody, which was later revealed to be a result of a scheme involving another inmate, Joan Depaz.

Depaz, who was also incarcerated on murder charges, collaborated with Link through prison vents, sending semen in plastic wrap over a two-month period for insemination. Link likened her pregnancy to a miraculous event and detailed the communication and method used to receive the semen from Depaz. The unique circumstances of her conception have drawn widespread attention to the case.
