Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has expressed strong frustration over the situation where thousands of tons of aid intended to assist starving Palestinians are stranded in a warehouse. Approximately 5,000 pallets, equivalent to 4,000 metric tonnes, containing essential items like wheat flour, canned goods, yeast, and sugar are currently held up in a World Food Programme (WFP) facility near Amman, Jordan, due to Israeli restrictions.
Despite the availability of sufficient aid in Jordan to facilitate the delivery of 150 trucks daily into Gaza for a three-month period, the primary crossing from Jordan to the West Bank remains closed to goods vehicles by Israel. Ms. Cooper emphasized the urgency of the aid reaching Gaza, highlighting that the wheat alone in the warehouse could sustain 700,000 people for a month. She called for the reopening of the Jordanian route into Gaza and all other crossings to ensure the swift delivery of aid to the people in need.
Efforts are being made to increase aid distribution to Gaza following the recent ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. However, the current aid levels fall short of those outlined in the peace plan proposed by Donald Trump. NGOs have accused the Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, of impeding aid shipments and limiting access for charities to provide assistance in the region.
Ms. Cooper, in collaboration with the UN, other allies, and a US-led coordinating committee, is actively working to expedite the flow of aid into Gaza. She stressed the necessity for progress before winter, as more than a million individuals in Gaza require shelter. Supplies, including warm clothing and shelter kits, are also stranded in warehouses operated by organizations such as Unicef.
It is crucial to expedite the movement of aid via the Jordanian route to address the immediate needs of the population. While there are plans for a broader reconstruction program to establish permanent housing solutions, the focus is currently on delivering temporary shelter and aid kits promptly. Musonda Kasonde, deputy representative of operations at Unicef, described the situation in Gaza as desperate, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance before winter sets in.
Winter preparations, such as providing children with shoes and warm coats, are imperative to ensure the well-being of the population. The plea is to open access and facilitate the swift delivery of essential supplies to alleviate the dire circumstances faced by the people in Gaza.
