Two individuals have been taken into custody by West Yorkshire Police on suspicion of murder following the death of Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of Lostprophets, at HMP Wakefield. The arrested suspects, aged 25 and 43, are currently being held by law enforcement. According to authorities, a murder inquiry has been initiated after a male inmate at HMP Wakefield passed away following a severe assault. The victim, aged 48, sustained grave injuries and was declared deceased at the scene despite medical efforts. The two arrested men are under suspicion of murder and are in police custody as detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team continue their investigation.
Ian Watkins, a convicted sex offender serving a 29-year sentence, was reportedly attacked with a knife by another prisoner at HMP Wakefield on Saturday morning. Emergency services responded to the incident, but Watkins, aged 48, was pronounced dead at the scene. The prison was placed on lockdown immediately after the attack. Watkins had been sentenced to 29 years in prison in December 2013 with an additional six years on license after admitting to various sexual offenses, including the attempted rape of an infant.
In a separate incident in 2023, Watkins was assaulted and hospitalized, although his injuries were not deemed life-threatening. The Prison Service acknowledged the event at HMP Wakefield and refrained from providing further details pending the police investigation. Earlier in 2019, Watkins was handed an additional 10-month sentence for possessing a mobile phone in prison while serving time for his previous crimes. During the trial, Watkins claimed he was coerced by fellow inmates to hold the phone to communicate with female fans for financial gain.
Despite Watkins’ claims, Judge Rodney Jameson KC rejected the notion that Watkins possessed the phone under duress and sentenced him accordingly. In a previous legal attempt to appeal his 29-year sentence, Watkins was denied any reduction by the Court of Appeal, which deemed his offenses against children as heinous and deserving of a lengthy prison term. Watkins had been convicted of multiple offenses, including the sexual abuse of children, resulting in consecutive prison terms to run alongside his initial 29-year sentence.
The disturbing nature of the evidence presented during Watkins’ trials, including videos depicting his heinous acts, further reinforced the severity of his crimes and the subsequent legal repercussions.
