Gaza Truce Collapses: Surge in Violence as Israel Targets Territory

The much-anticipated truce in Gaza has collapsed as the Israeli Prime Minister directed his forces to carry out “intense attacks” on the Palestinian territory. This action came after the Israeli leader accused Hamas of violating the peace agreement, to which Hamas responded by alleging 125 breaches by Israel.

Israel reported that a coffin delivered by Hamas on Monday did not contain the body of a missing captive as expected. This development signifies the breakdown of the two-week ceasefire, leading to a surge in violence and significant military operations.

According to officials in Gaza, since the ceasefire began on October 10, Israel has caused the deaths of 94 Palestinians within the Strip. In a statement, Hamas accused Israel on Tuesday of attempting to create false justifications for future aggressive actions in Gaza.

Hamas claimed that Israel is impeding search efforts for bodies in the Strip and urged mediators to allow humanitarian tasks to proceed without political interference. Tonight, residents in Gaza are fearful of renewed Israeli attacks across the region.

Earlier on Tuesday, there were reports of gunfire and explosions in Rafah, southern Gaza. Israel accused Hamas of misidentifying the remains of a recently returned captive, whose body had been recovered two years ago.

The conflict between Israel and Gaza has resulted in the deaths of at least 68,527 individuals and injuries to 170,395 since it started in October 2023. During the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, 1,200 people perished in Israel, with around 200 individuals taken as captives.

The October 7 attacks prompted Israel to engage in conflicts on various fronts, including with Lebanese Hezbollah, Yemeni Houthis, pro-Iran Iraqi militia, and Syrian factions. Additionally, there were US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year, targeting nuclear facilities in Tehran.

Many of the enemy forces aligned with Iran, who are proxies for the country, have been severely weakened, potentially taking years to rebuild their capacities. The Iranian regime, along with Hamas in Gaza, has suffered significant losses as a result of the prolonged conflict with Israel.

Critics have accused Netanyahu of deliberately provoking actions to undermine the ceasefire agreement. An analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations, Muhammad Shehada, stated that Netanyahu has been seeking ways to resume hostilities in Gaza since the ceasefire commenced, citing restrictions on aid and ongoing bombardments despite the ceasefire being in effect.

Both sides have alleged violations of the ceasefire pact, necessitating significant diplomatic efforts to salvage the peace deal. It is reported that US President Donald Trump is closely monitoring the Israeli military operations in Gaza.
