Hamas, which is weakening, is currently facing internal challenges from four dangerous factions vying for control of Gaza. After a prolonged period of conflict, a ceasefire is in place, prompting the terror group to try to regain its authority. US President Donald Trump has threatened to forcefully disarm the organization and expects the surrender of weapons soon, as the group makes new moves.
Hamas has deployed approximately 7,000 fighters to “purge Gaza of criminals and collaborators.” The groups involved, such as the Popular Force, Doghmosh, Al-Majayda, and Hellis, are rumored to have backing from Israel. Recent violent clashes have erupted in various parts of the Gaza Strip shortly after the peace agreement. Notably, Palestinian influencer Saleh al-Jafarawi, known as “Mr FAFO,” was reportedly killed in one of the attacks.
Amidst the power struggle, Hamas’s death squads have been conducting public executions of perceived enemies in Gaza to reclaim control. The executions have been condemned by the Palestinian Authority, which oversees the West Bank, as “heinous crimes.” Local families and armed groups have taken advantage of the chaos in the region, with some accused of exploiting humanitarian aid for personal gain, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Despite returning some deceased hostages, concerns have arisen that the fragile ceasefire in Gaza could collapse, especially as Israel has not opened the Rafah border crossing for aid deliveries. President Trump has emphasized that Hamas must disarm, warning of potential forceful action if they do not comply. The peace plan requires Hamas to disarm and release the deceased hostages, commitments that have yet to be fulfilled.
Efforts are ongoing to retrieve the remaining bodies of hostages promised to be released by Hamas. Israeli officials have maintained the closure of the Rafah crossing as a means to pressure Hamas to fulfill its obligations. The situation remains tense following years of conflict that have resulted in a high death toll in Gaza.
