Jockey Crushed by Horse in Car Theft Attempt Attack

A prominent jockey faced a life-threatening situation when the horse she was riding fell on her, crushing her pelvis. Sonja Logan, in 2023, was the victim of a car theft attempt that left her with severe injuries just weeks before her wedding. The assailants, who fled when the alarm was raised, have yet to be apprehended. Recounting the harrowing incident, Logan described the excruciating pain of being trapped under a half-ton racehorse as the most intense sensation she had ever experienced.

While riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her spouse Tommy, Logan found herself in a perilous situation when the horse became startled by an unknown stimulus. Reflecting on the incident, she explained how the horse reared up in the starting gate, causing her to fall to the ground with the horse landing on top of her, resulting in a crushed pelvis.

Logan underwent treatment at Darwin Royal Hospital before being transferred to Adelaide Royal Hospital due to the specialized care required for her pelvic injuries. She underwent surgery to repair her shattered hip, requiring the insertion of screws and a metal plate for stabilization. Fortunately, the impact narrowly avoided fatal consequences, as the horse’s weight landed on her pelvis rather than her ribs, preventing severe internal bleeding.

Despite enduring excruciating pain, Logan is now on the path to recovery, assisted by a walking frame as she heals. She anticipates a six to eight-month recovery period, highlighting the importance of pain management and rehabilitation in her journey back to competitive riding. Following the traumatic carjacking incident, Logan returned to racing, achieving success in competitions while battling personal struggles behind the scenes, including depression and alcohol misuse.

In a remarkable turnaround, Logan overcame her mental health challenges by embracing competitive bodybuilding, finding solace in a supportive network that aided her in overcoming adversity. Grateful for the unwavering support of her loved ones, especially her husband Tommy, who has been a pillar of strength throughout her recovery, Logan remains optimistic about her return to the sport she loves.
