Luke Donald is set to discuss the possibility of becoming the Ryder Cup captain for the third time in 2027 with officials from the DP World Tour in Dubai this week. Shane Lowry, known for his impressive performance at Bethpage Black, has encouraged Donald to continue leading the team in Ireland.
Having guided Europe to victory in Long Island last September and in Rome in 2021, the former world No.1 is aiming to make history as no European captain has won the Ryder Cup three times. Donald, 48, is currently participating in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, marking his first tournament of the year.
In upcoming discussions with DP World’s chief executive Guy Kinnings, Donald will evaluate the responsibilities and considerations associated with the Ryder Cup captaincy. Lowry, reflecting on the dramatic final day at Bethpage Black, expressed his belief that the captaincy should belong to Donald if he desires it, highlighting the significant commitment and potential for a historic achievement.
Acknowledging the support from fellow players like Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick, Donald emphasized the importance of player endorsement in his decision-making process. Notably, Vice-captains Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose are potential candidates for the role if Donald opts not to lead the team for a third time.
