“Man Convicted in Brutal Hotel Employee Murder”

A man has been convicted of the murder of a hotel employee in an assault at a train station platform. Deng Chol Majek, an asylum seeker from Sudan claiming to be 19 years old, was staying at the Park Inn hotel in Walsall when he was accused of killing Ms. Whyte. The victim, aged 27, was fatally stabbed 23 times in the head on October 20 last year and succumbed to her injuries three days later in the hospital. Ms. Whyte was attacked while waiting for her train home after work around 11:15 pm. Evidence presented during the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court included CCTV footage showing Majek interacting with Ms. Whyte at the hotel entrance and later following her into and out of Bescot Stadium station. Subsequently, Majek was observed socializing with friends near the hotel. A witness noted that Majek appeared relaxed and cheerful during this time. Video footage shown in court depicted Majek dancing with friends on his way back to his hotel room. Throughout the trial, Majek denied the murder charge, possession of a screwdriver, and being present at the train station during the incident. He claimed he was outside the hotel at the time of the attack. Majek explained discrepancies in his age recorded in German documents by attributing them to errors on his identification papers, stating that he left Sudan at the age of 16. In a statement, Senior Investigator DCI Paul Attwell described the attack as brutal and unprovoked, expressing disappointment at Majek’s lack of remorse. He commended the victim’s family for their strength and support during the investigation. Attwell emphasized the importance of remembering the victim, Rhiannon, and celebrating her life rather than focusing on her perpetrator.
