A man in good physical condition who ignored his symptoms as a mere cold found himself in a coma for several weeks and on the brink of death after catching the flu. Aaron Clark, aged 42, went from feeling unwell in bed to being rushed to intensive care with multiple organ failure in just four days.
During his 16-day induced coma at Kings Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, Aaron, who had not received the flu vaccine, required a ventilator for breathing assistance and dialysis due to kidney failure. Despite having no pre-existing health issues, Aaron has decided to get vaccinated for the flu for the first time and is advocating for others to do the same.
Reflecting on his experience, Aaron shared, “When I woke up, a doctor congratulated me for coming back from such a critical condition.” He added, “It was a close call. I had never experienced the flu before – I hadn’t even had a cold in years. The severity of the illness took me by surprise, escalating rapidly from thinking I just needed rest to being rushed to the hospital.”
Aaron began feeling unwell in December, initially attributing his symptoms to a common cold. However, a visit to the doctor revealed dangerously low blood oxygen levels of 72%, well below the normal range. The rapid deterioration led to his hospitalization and induced coma.
Phaedra Kay, a ward leader involved in Aaron’s care, described his condition upon arrival as severe, with multi-organ failure due to a potent strain of flu. Dr. Mark Roberts, a respiratory consultant, emphasized the potential seriousness of influenza, particularly for vulnerable individuals, highlighting the importance of vaccination in reducing symptoms and preventing the virus’s spread in the community.
Flu vaccinations are provided at no cost to high-risk groups such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with specific health conditions. These vaccinations are accessible through GP practices, community pharmacies, and school vaccination programs.
