“Monster Nursery School Instructor Convicted of Child’s Murder”

A cruel nursery school instructor assaulted her partner’s 4-year-old daughter and then suffocated her in the bathtub.

Amber Lee Hughes, labeled a monster, committed the heinous acts against Nada-Jane Chalita on January 23, 2023, while the girl’s father, Elie, was away for a job interview.

Following Elie’s departure, Hughes, feeling neglected and suspecting infidelity, cruelly expressed her anger through messages sent before the tragic incident. Hughes ominously stated, “You broke my heart; I’m going to burn yours. How could you do that to me?”

Hughes callously placed Nada-Jane in the bath where she sat on her until the child drowned. Post-mortem examinations revealed Nada-Jane had been sexually assaulted twice before her untimely death.

In a trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes acknowledged her borderline personality disorder but admitted to being fully aware of her actions that day. She confessed that a dispute with Elie regarding his alleged infidelity triggered the events leading to Nada-Jane’s death.

Despite claiming her troubled childhood and mental health struggles influenced her behavior, Hughes faced sentencing on October 27. The court heard of her multiple suicide attempts following the murder.

Social worker Carina Wolmarans testified that Hughes had a history of being bullied and attempting suicide. Wolmarans noted Hughes’ remorse over the tragedy, stating she wished she could undo her actions. However, Judge Richard Mkabela deemed Hughes’ actions as premeditated, citing the threatening texts sent before the incident as evidence.

Hughes became involved with Elie in 2021 and moved in with him and Nada-Jane. The court revealed a turbulent relationship marked by Hughes’ threats towards Nada-Jane.

In August, Hughes was convicted of premeditated murder and rape, with both charges carrying life imprisonment sentences. Elie expressed that no punishment could suffice for the loss of his daughter, emphasizing the lack of justice in this world or lifetime.
