A mother, who was mistakenly detained for fare evasion by a police officer who insulted her, tearfully recounted her desire to join the police force in the past.
Jocelyn Agyemang was captured on video pleading with PC Perry Lathwood to release her arm as he held her in front of her distressed son, resulting in bruises during the July 2023 incident in Croydon, South London.
The video of the incident went viral on social media platforms, revealing the officer’s alleged misconduct. Agyemang expressed feeling deeply humiliated and embarrassed by the incident, emphasizing the officer’s contemptuous demeanor.
Despite being fined £1,500 for assault for the wrongful arrest, PC Lathwood had his conviction overturned last September. He is currently under scrutiny for unlawfully using force against the woman.
Following the incident, Agyemang sought medical attention at A&E for bruising on her arm and was prescribed anti-inflammatories. During her testimony, she became emotional when recalling the arrest.
When questioned about her sentiments towards the police at the time, Agyemang clarified that she harbored no anti-police feelings and had aspirations of becoming a police officer, holding a degree in policing.
According to Cecily White, representing the Met, Agyemang was stopped after alighting a bus while traveling with her son to an appointment, intending to drop him off at her mother’s place. Despite having paid her fare, Agyemang purportedly signaled reluctance when asked to show her ticket.
Allegedly, Lathwood forcefully grabbed Agyemang’s arm, continued to exert pressure, and ultimately handcuffed her. Video footage from Lathwood’s body camera captured Agyemang pleading for him to release her, expressing distress at the situation.
The commotion attracted the attention of passersby and other staff at the scene, with Agyemang eventually being cleared of any wrongdoing after it was confirmed that she had paid her fare. She later reported the incident to the police, citing discomfort and pain in her arm.
White argued that Lathwood’s use of force was excessive and unnecessary, exacerbating the confrontation. The tribunal is ongoing to further address the matter.
