“MPs Urge Tax Hike on Gambling Industry in Budget”

Rachel Reeves is under pressure to reject industry alarmism and announce potential tax increases on gambling in the upcoming Budget. A notable group of MPs is advocating for the Chancellor to proceed with measures that would penalize companies profiting significantly from gambling activities, which are causing substantial harm.

According to a recent report by the Treasury Committee, while many individuals engage in safe gambling practices at traditional venues like arcades and bingo halls, there has been a concerning rise in online betting platforms promoting addictive and harmful behaviors with no tangible benefits to society.

Despite efforts by the gambling industry to downplay the negative impacts of their operations, the committee firmly dismissed claims that gambling has no adverse social consequences. Dame Meg Hillier, the committee chair, highlighted the industry’s concealment of its harmful aspects behind a veneer of tradition, emphasizing the detrimental effects of online betting on individuals and communities.

The report emphasized the need for the government to resist industry pressure and impose taxes on online gambling activities commensurate with the harm they cause. It cited government data revealing a significant increase in profits generated by online operators over the past decade, reaching £6.9 billion annually.

Recommendations include raising the current 21% remote gaming duty on online profits and the 20% machine games duty on physical slot machines, surpassing the duty paid by casino clubs. However, such tax hikes could face opposition from bookmakers concerned about reduced revenues for their broader operations, including physical outlets.

Critics also fear that higher machine games duty rates could negatively impact businesses like seaside arcades, pubs, and bingo halls that host slot machines. Furthermore, there are concerns about potential shifts towards unregulated black market betting if taxes are increased.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has previously supported calls for elevated levies on gambling firms to alleviate child poverty. Speculation suggests that horse racing might be exempted from the proposed tax hikes, a move that has garnered attention in the lead-up to the Budget announcement.
