“New Questionnaire Helps Pet Owners Assess Digestive Health”

A new questionnaire has been created to assist pet owners in evaluating their dog or cat’s digestive health. This tool aims to boost confidence among individuals who may struggle to recognize signs of potential digestive issues in their furry companions. According to Protexin’s veterinary adviser, Ronan Fitzgerald, certain behaviors like lip licking, back arching, or reluctance to move could indicate underlying tummy troubles in pets. Research involving 2,000 pet owners revealed that only a small percentage feel adept at identifying digestive health problems in their pets.

Ronan explained that peculiar stances such as the ‘prayer position’ in dogs or cats, along with holding the bum in the air, drooling, or pushing away food bowls, may signal digestive discomfort. Additional signs to watch for include tender or gurgling tummies, aversion to belly rubs, flatulence, or blood in stools, which could all point to the need for veterinary attention.

A representative from Protexin emphasized the importance of understanding the signs of good and poor gut health in pets, as it directly impacts their overall well-being. Recognizing these indicators can contribute to the vitality and health of pets, ensuring they remain lively and thriving.

To address digestive discomfort in pets, Ronan recommended monitoring symptoms, noting any patterns, and seeking veterinary advice if issues persist or worsen. While mild stomach upsets may resolve on their own, ongoing or severe gut health problems require professional evaluation and possibly dietary adjustments or the introduction of gut-health supplements.

Despite the significance of digestive health in pets, a mere 25% of pet owners actively monitor their animals’ digestive well-being daily. Notably, a substantial portion of dogs and cats exhibit potential digestive issues multiple times a year, prompting owners to switch pet food or seek veterinary assistance. The OnePoll.com survey revealed that pet owners typically spend up to £426 annually on maintaining their pet’s health.
