A court case has revealed that a Polish woman and a co-defendant are accused of stalking the family of Madeleine McCann.
Evidence presented in court indicates that Julia Wandelt, 24, from Lubin, Poland, and Karen Spragg, 61, from Cardiff, deny the charge of stalking Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February of this year. Despite Wandelt’s claims of having memories related to Madeleine’s childhood and disappearance, scientific evidence confirms she is not related to the McCann family.
According to the prosecution, Wandelt began asserting that she was Madeleine to anyone who would listen starting in June 2022. The court heard that despite clear statements that Wandelt is not Madeleine, she persisted in her belief that she was abducted and taken to Poland after May 2007.
The prosecutor informed jurors that Wandelt relentlessly contacted the McCanns, even obtaining Kate’s mobile number and bombarding her with calls and messages. Messages allegedly sent by Wandelt to the McCann family included pleas to be recognized as Madeleine and requests for DNA tests to prove her identity.
The court also heard that Wandelt emailed Gerry McCann claiming to be Madeleine, citing physical similarities and asking for communication if he believed Madeleine could still be alive. The trial continues as the case unfolds.
