As winter approaches, you may have observed water droplets forming on your windows due to the interaction of warm, humid air with cooler surfaces. This condensation not only poses an annoyance but can also harm the window sealant and frames. Fortunately, there is a quick 10-second tip to help prevent this issue.
Experts at Screwfix explain that closed curtains act as effective draught excluders but can also prevent windowpanes from warming up adequately, leading to condensation. To tackle this, they suggest keeping curtains open overnight or opting for thinner curtains to reduce moisture retention.
Cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, known as the ‘TV Queen of Clean,’ shared a cost-effective hack to combat condensation. By rubbing a small amount of washing up liquid vigorously onto the glass, a protective barrier is created, preventing water droplets from accumulating. This method involves applying a fine film of undiluted washing up liquid using a dry microfibre cloth and polishing it thoroughly to ensure no streaks are left behind.
While this hack offers a temporary solution, caution is advised to avoid damage to window frames and the need for continuous reapplication. For more severe condensation issues, using a dehumidifier or improving indoor air circulation is recommended. Additional tips include using bathroom and kitchen fans, opening windows regularly, and avoiding drying clothes on radiators to help combat condensation during colder months.
