A road worker described as “determined and strong-minded” had a life-altering experience when his leg got stuck in a resurfacing machine, leading to its amputation. Brandon Belshaw faced this traumatic event on October 3, receiving immediate medical attention including a critical blood transfusion before being airlifted to a hospital.
Following the accident, Brandon underwent multiple surgeries and spent five days on a ventilator during his recovery process. He woke up four days later to the devastating news that he had lost his right leg. Despite the challenges ahead, his brother Jordan Smith praised Brandon’s resilience, describing him as a selfless individual always willing to assist others.
The incident occurred while Brandon was working in Doncaster, prompting emergency services to close Leicester Avenue in Intake under the supervision of South Yorkshire Police. Doctors from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance provided crucial medical care on-site before transferring Brandon to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, where he eventually regained consciousness on October 7 after being sedated.
To aid in Brandon’s recovery journey, a fundraiser initiated by his family has raised over £20,000, with plans for a 12-mile hike in the Lake District to support him further. This fundraising effort symbolizes Brandon’s determination and endurance, mirroring the uphill battles he has faced and those that lie ahead in his rehabilitation.
The hike, set to include summiting Helvellyn, a 3,117-foot mountain overlooking Ullswater Lake, signifies the strength and dedication shared between Brandon and his girlfriend Emily, who have cherished annual trips to the Lake District for the past three years. Proceeds from the fundraising campaign will contribute to Brandon’s physical and mental well-being, covering expenses for physiotherapy services, prosthetics, housing adjustments, and transportation modifications to enable his independent living.
Additionally, a portion of the funds raised will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity, emphasizing the gratitude towards the lifesaving assistance provided during Brandon’s critical moment.
