A care home in Liverpool city center has been placed under special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) due to concerning living conditions for residents. Inspectors discovered mice living in mattresses and exposed wires posing a risk of electrocution to residents. The facility, Rodney House, run by EBS Services Limited, had 48 residents at the time of inspection in June and July this year. Following the inspection, all residents were relocated to alternative accommodations.
Specializing in providing support to older individuals, those with mental health conditions, and physical disabilities, the care home received an inadequate rating from the CQC and remains under special measures. The CQC’s director of operations in the north, Karen Knapton, expressed disappointment in the leadership failures at Rodney House, leading to substandard care provision.
Inspectors noted various issues at the care home, including an infestation of flies, mice activity, exposed wiring, damaged furniture, and unhygienic living conditions. The report highlighted the risks of electrocution and injuries due to the poor maintenance of the facility. The CQC identified eight breaches of legal regulations, prompting urgent conditions on EBS Services Limited to prevent the intake of new residents without prior consent.
Ms. Knapton emphasized the urgency of addressing the deplorable conditions at Rodney House, ensuring rapid and widespread improvements. The CQC will closely monitor the home and utilize regulatory powers to facilitate necessary changes. Residents’ distress due to delayed staff responses and lack of basic amenities like functional television sets underscored the dire situation at the care home.
